چکیده

observed, and D ∆ is the (time-dependent) diffusion coefficient measured at this diffusion time. Short-time-scale measurements of hyperpolarized He diffusion in the human lung typically use diffusion times between 1 and 2 ms. At this time scale, the He diffusion coefficient in normal lung airspaces is approximately 0.2 cm/s. Thus these measurements probe a length scale of approximately 350-500 microns, which is substantially larger than a normal alveolus. In order to probe sub-alveolar length scales, diffusion times less than a millisecond must be used. However, it is difficult to make accurate diffusion measurements at sub-millisecond time scales using conventional pulse-sequence techniques.

Tortuosity measurement and the effects of finite pulse widths on xenon gas diffusion NMR studies of porous media.

We have extended the utility of NMR as a technique to probe porous media structure over length scales of approximately 100-2000 microm by using the spin 1/2 noble gas 129Xe imbibed into the system's pore space. Such length scales are much greater than can be probed with NMR diffusion studies of water-saturated porous media. We utilized Pulsed Gradient Spin Echo NMR measurements of the time-depe...

Excess air in the noble gas groundwater paleothermometer: A new model based on diffusion in the gas phase

[1] A key assumption for calculating paleotemperatures using noble gas concentrations in groundwater is that water equilibrates with standard air. However, if the unsaturated zone is depleted in O2, the noble gas partial pressures will be elevated, resulting in a bias of noble gas temperatures (NGTs) to low values. This oxygen depletion (OD) mechanism was used to explain low NGT values for a sh...

Noble gases and stable isotopes in a shallow aquifer in southern Michigan: Implications for noble gas paleotemperature reconstructions for cool climates

[1] Noble gas data from the Glacial Drift, the shallowest aquifer in southern Michigan confirm findings by Ma et al. (2004) that modern noble gas temperatures (NGTs) are systematically below the current mean annual air temperature (MAAT) which, in turn, is similar to the ground temperature of these recharge waters. By tracking noble gas concentrations as well as stable isotope ratios through an...

The narrow pulse approximation and long length scale determination in xenon gas diffusion NMR studies of model porous media.

We report a systematic study of xenon gas diffusion NMR in simple model porous media, random packs of mono-sized glass beads, and focus on three specific areas peculiar to gas-phase diffusion. These topics are: (i) diffusion of spins on the order of the pore dimensions during the application of the diffusion encoding gradient pulses in a PGSE experiment (breakdown of the narrow pulse approximat...
